Wherever it was available, I made extensive use of portraiture when writing my novels although inevitably these were only available for characters of some distinction or wealth. For others, I scoured any available resource either for similar images or more modern re-creations, even using old photographic images of the descendants of my characters as inspiration. It is invaluable for an author to have an actual image in one’s head as one reimagines the past. Not only for faces, of course. Clothes, furniture, modes of transportation, houses, great buildings, and the very many and different geographic destinations that the novel encompasses must be seen to be understood. Here are just some of the portraits, miniatures, drawings, engravings and photographs that I have made use of. The much maligned internet is also a fabulous rich resource!
